Add a striking tribute to World War II naval aviation with the F6F Hellcat Metal Sign, featuring artwork inspired by the American Heritage Museum’s F6F-3N Hellcat. This piece honors the aircraft that became the backbone of U.S. Navy fighter operations and played a crucial role in the development of carrier-based night fighting in the Pacific.
The F6F Hellcat’s story is closely tied to the Navy’s urgent need for a night defense capability in 1942, when Japanese night attacks posed a serious threat to the fleet. Naval officer Evan “Pete” Aurand worked with scientists at MIT to adapt the Hellcat with early airborne radar, creating the F6F-3N. Pioneering squadrons such as VF(N)-76 used these aircraft to intercept enemy raiders in complete darkness, helping to turn the tide of the air war during major campaigns including the Battle of the Philippine Sea and operations against Iwo Jima.
The museum’s Hellcat, Bureau Number 41476, served with Task Force 58 and remains one of the most important surviving examples of early U.S. Navy night fighters. Today, it is preserved and displayed at the American Heritage Museum as a vital link to this often-overlooked chapter of aviation history.
