During the early years of World War II, the Battle of the Atlantic became a struggle for survival as German U-boats threatened to sever the shipping lifelines sustaining Britain and the Allied war effort. Long-range PBY Catalina patrol aircraft helped close dangerous gaps in convoy protection across the North Atlantic. Accepted by the U.S. Navy on December 22, 1941, PBY-5A Catalina BuNo 2459 was sent to VP-73 in Iceland, where it became the first PBY credited with sinking a U-boat on August 20, 1942 when it sank U-464. It went on to claim a total of 3.5 U-Boat victories over its history and is not only the oldest flying PBY in existence, but is also the most historic!
